Medicare supplement plans
A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan (also called Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare. When you receive care, Medicare pays its share of approved costs (usually 80% of covered services). The remaining portion of the bill is then sent to your Medicare Supplement plan, which helps cover its share (often the other 20%).
It’s important to know that Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage (Part D). If you need prescription coverage, you’ll need to enroll in a separate Part D plan to avoid late penalties.
Unlike Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement coverage is standardized and does not change from year to year. While premiums may increase over time, the core benefits of your plan remain the same.
